Here's a brief interview that I did with the great people at Kirklees Local TV.

It was great to sit down with them and talk about the issues facing Colne Valley. I know I am the right candidate to stand up for our fantastic constituency in Parliament, protecting our hospital, our council budget and our children's education!

We are very pleased and proud to announce that our candidate for the Colne Valley constituency in the 2017 General election is Thelma Walker.

Thelma Walker - your candidate for the Colne Valley constituency"I have lived in the Colne Valley for most of my life. I'm married to Labour Councillor Rob Walker and my working life has been in teaching. I've worked in a number of Kirklees schools, three of which are in the Colne Valley constituency.

It is an absolute honour to be selected to represent Colne Valley Labour Party at this election – the constituency where I live,  and where I raised my children, who were both educated at local schools. I love the people and the place. Our valleys are an area with a proud history – and a bright future.

But we have been short-changed under this government, with local schools facing cuts and academisation, GP practices under threat, our local council slashed repeatedly, our A&E potentially closing and our roads falling to pieces. I will fight a clean and fair campaign, standing up for every single town, village, street, and resident."

You can keep up to date with my campaign in the run up to the General election through this website, my Facebook page, and my Twitter feed.

Did you know that anyone who is eligible to vote in the General Election on June 8 (if you've not yet registered, it's not too late - here's how to do that) can apply to get a postal vote?

Anyone can apply to vote by post - you don't need to give a reason. It can certainly help if you're likely to be away on the day, or maybe the hours you work don't easily fit with getting to your polling station.

There is a simple form to fill in which you can download from the Kirklees council website here. It takes just a few minutes to complete the form, and once you've sent it back, they will let you know that they've received it.

You must submit your application before the deadline, which is 5pm on May 23rd, in order to get your postal vote sent to you in time.

It's as simple as that.

This may be a surprise election, but it’s no surprise that Theresa May changes her mind when she thinks she might not get her own way. It is regrettable that yet again The Conservatives are putting party political opportunism ahead of the stability that the country needs, however, Colne Valley Labour always welcome a conversation about what kind of country people want to live in.

This election is set against a background of the threatened closure of A&E at HRI, cuts to school budgets across Colne Valley, damage to local health services and social care, a growing housing crisis. Over the last week Labour have announced a series of policies that have the support of the majority of the public. We will be out in the coming months talking to people about how Labour policies would benefit them and their families and what kind of representation they want for Colne Valley in Parliament to make our country better for everyone.

If you'd like to get involved in our campaign to elect a Labour MP in the Colne Valley, please use the links above to contact us or volunteer.

Hundreds of concerned citizens from the Colne and Holme valleys and across Huddersfield travelled down to London today to take part in the huge demonstration in support of a fully funded NHS. The crowd, estimated at 250,000 by organisers (although no doubt police estimates will be much lower), marched the 2 miles from Tavistock Square to Parliament Square in a good natured display of the huge level of concern that exists right across the country about the way that the Conservative Government is mis-handling the National Health Service.
