Nearly 3000 families suffering from debt in the Colne and Holme Valley.
The latest figures published today by the Children’s Society claim that nearly 3000 families are suffering from debt issues within the Colne Valley Constituency.
The Society’s report suggests that 2997 families are living with problematic debt in the Colne and Holme Valley areas with 5227 children potentially affected. The report’s findings show that a third of all families struggle to pay for essentials for their children in the last year.
Jane East, Colne Valley’s Labour Party Candidate commented:
“In 2014 we have over a fifth of families in the Colne Valley living with worrying levels of debt.
“This government’s policies are not helping hardworking families to succeed and to provide stable homes for their children. People are telling me time and time again that they are struggling with childcare costs, heating bills and securing a job that will give them a fair and reliable income. That is why Labour has committed to increasing childcare hours to 25 hours, freezing energy bills for 20 months and working towards the abolition of zero hour contracts.
“Our Conservative MP and his government have been challenged on each of these areas to back Labour’s plans and each time they have refused. When will he and his out of touch government listen and act on the behalf of their constituents?
“I will be looking at ways of helping families to reduce their vulnerability by accessing affordable lending through credit unions rather than pay day lenders that only add to the challenges they face.”
